Myawady: Bus fares were ramped up to more than three times the usual cost, as tens of thousands of migrant workers returned home for the Thingyan holiday period on Sunday, sources said.

Normally bus fares from Myawady to Yangon are between Ks10,000 and Ks15,000, but some bus lines raised their fares to between Ks18,000 and 20,000 for Thingyan period.

Some migrant workers returned home after being granted permission at the Friendship Bridge and some crossed Moei River using motor boats.

“Many migrant workers returned home today. I think more workers returned home as they don’t have to pay extra money for the border crossing,” said a person who lives near Friendship Bridge.

As many as 30,000 workers returned home for the Thingyan holiday between April 5 and April 9, according to an official at Friendship Bridge.
