Thai firm proposes high-speed rail linking Mon State and Yangon

A Thai company has submitted a proposal to the Mon State government to operate a high-speed magnetic levitation rail service between Yangon and the state capital of Mawlamyaing, its regional representative said.
Aung Kyaw San, of Ammita Tammakun Co. Ltd., said the proposal would also be submitted to Nay Pyi Taw for approval. “We plan to start measurements within two months after receiving permission,” he said earlier this week.
Mon State Minister Ohn Myint said he welcomed investment in the state and that he told the company to cooperate with the Ministry of Rail Transportation.
If it gets the green light, the railway will be built by German engineering firm Siemens. Construction is expected to take two years.
The company also plans to operate a similar service between Yangon and Mandalay.
Aung Kyaw San said it plans to charge US$10 a ticket for the Yangon-Mawlamyaing route and $20 a ticket for the Yangon-Mandalay route.
The company says it plans to build a railway system connecting Myanmar with Thailand, India and China, as well as the Asean Railway Network, which will link Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.
