National League for Democracy to hold fund-raising concert

Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) will hold a fund-raising concert on December 27 and 28 to mark the second anniversary of the party’s education network, the party announced at the press conference yesterday (December 18).
NLD’ fund-raising concert will be held at the People’s Square of Yangon. It will be inaugurated by NLD’s chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi.
She will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony. The party is planning to hold an auction for two personal souvenirs of Suu Kyi at the concert.
Aurora, Lazy Club, Heaven Born, Spectrum, Iron Cross, Plus Three, Mizzima Hlaing, Shwe Thanzin bands will be playing with famous artists and musicians. Myitta Shwe Zin comedy show will be performed by famous comedians.
The fund raised will transfer to NLD’s education network which is supporting free school education.
The concert is sponsored by companies including Air Bagan and Asia Green Development Bank (AGD), owned by the country’s business tycoon Tay Za, a close associate of former state head Than Shwe, and Shwe Than Lwin-owned Sky Net.
Shwe Than Lwin is multi Investments Company with media business.
Those companies are willing to donate over US$240,000 (over 200 million kyats) for the education network of NLD.
Despite sponsoring the fund-raising concert, these companies are susceptible to the accusations of cronyism.
Sources claimed that Tay Za-owned Htoo Enterprise limited has received the broker fee on Lapadaungtaung Copper Mine Project, a controversial project that has triggered strong protest recently.
Sky Net favoured by the government has recently purchased the broadcasting rights of British Premiere League Football season 2013-16 with US$40 million.
The company has been permitted to run the beer, cigarette and beverages factories under the new Myanmar Citizen Investment Law enacted on July 11. The company enjoys tax relief and exemptions on imported vehicles and machineries.
