1,000 logs seized during Thingyan

The Forestry Department says more than 1,000 illegally smuggled logs, including teak, padauk and tamalan were seized during Thingyan under a special operation across the country.

The department said most timber was seized in Mon State, Magway Region, Ayeyarwaddy Region and Shan State.

Officials from the Forestry Department reportedly formed teams with the police, Special Investigation Department and General Administration Department to perform the operation.

More than 500 logs, including padauk and tamalan, weighing about 56 tonnes, were seized in Mon State during Thingyan, it was claimed. 

Fifty smuggled teak logs, weighing about 4.3 tonnes, were seized in Pauk Township, Magway Region.

The authorities announced that more than 26 tonnes of smuggled timber were seized in Pathein Township, Ayeyarwaddy Region, along with suspects and 89 logs in Loilin District, Shan State.

They say those arrested will be prosecuted.
