Inter-terminal connection process in Yangon International Airport between Terminal 1 and 2 will be finished soon, according to an announcement from Yangon Aerodrome Company Ltd. (YACL).
“The upgrading process of the Yangon International Airport is done in three phases. At present, we are in Phase 3 and the inter-terminal connection process is expected to complete early mid-year,” said a spokesperson from the YACL.
Inter-terminal connection process, the expanding process of runways, hangar and building handling cargos and the construction process of new VIP/CIP Terminal are included in the upgrading process.
The Yangon International Airport provided services for 5.92 million passengers in 2016 and 5.45 million passengers in 2017.
The aviation authorities signed an agreement with the YACL to upgrade the airport within a period of 36-months. The YACL requested the authorities to extend the time span of the project to another 18 months as they have some projects left to finish, sources said.
The Yangon International Airport is standing as one of the gateway to Myanmar and the government is planning to implement Hanthawaddy International Airport project. At present, the construction work for the new Hanthawaddy International Airport project has not began so the authorities are implementing the upgrading process of the Yangon International Airport to be international standards in line with the increasing number of passengers in five or ten years time.
