UPDATE: Two suspects, Myat Thiha Htun and Zwe Man Oo, have been found guilty. The two friends cofessed that they had ran into some financial difficulties lately and decided to rob MK Travel & Tour at a time when they knew Poe Pwint Phyu to be alone. Myat Thiha Htun used to work for the company.

Two masked men entered MK Travels & Tours in Yangon’s Kyauktada Township office on June 18, when only one female employee was on duty. The men entered under the pretense of buying tickets to Singapore and promptly held the employee at knifepoint and bound her with ropes.

According to the victim, the robbers asked her where the money was, and when she refused to answer, they gagged her with a cloth and removed her jewellery.

They then rummaged through the office and left with Ks 5,000,000 (US$3,700) in cash taken from the office drawers.

“My sister called me around 1:30pm, and I couldn’t understand what she was saying, but I knew she was crying and shouting incoherently enough to know something was wrong. I rushed over to her workplace and found her all tied up around 2pm. The robbers did not take her phone, which was on the table. I let the police know after untying her,” said the brother of the victim.

The police arrived and promptly checked the CCTV footage and saw the faces of the robbers unmasked.

Latest reports say that both suspects have been detained at the Kyauktada Township Police Station.

Suspects will be charged with several offences, including armed robbery, kidnapping and violence if found guilty.
