Police have detained a suspect for the murder of editor Wai Yan Hein from Iron Rose Journal, who was killed inside the publication office in Pyin Oo Lwin on Wednesday, an officer from Yangon region police said on Thursday.
He said the suspect lives in Mingala Taungnyunt township and was being interrogated at Yangon region police office.
“The suspect has not arrived at the police station and the case is being handled by the region police force,” an officer at Pazundaung township police station said.
Neighbours had contacted chief editor and publisher of the Journal – the dead man’s parents – after a rotten odour began emitting from the office last Sunday morning.
They found his body, with bleeding from knife wounds in his chest and abdomen, draped across his chair, according to police.
Police Captain Yin Htway, head of Pazundaung township police station, said: “The publisher – also his father – rang on Sunday and informed us about his murder.
“We found that he had stab wounds on his body – there are 15 stab wounds, according to a forensic pathologist.
“We are trying to arrest the culprit. The murder case is not connected with political issues and it seems to be a personal case.”
The exact date when the murder occurred was not known. Neighbours said they saw the deceased on April 14 – last Friday – wearing the same clothes that police found he was murdered in. His Facebook account was still being used around 1.30am on April 14.
The police filed the case under Section 302 of Penal Code.
